The Summit County Sheriff’s Office Patrol Division is pleased to announce they have completed lockdown drills at 18 local schools, as required by House Bill 422. The Ohio Senate passed House Bill 422 in May of 2006. In April of 2007, The Ohio Attorney General provided a written interpretation for all schools, which are now required to have their local police departments come into the school and observe at least one lockdown drill by December 1st of each school year. Although this was enacted by some schools shortly after the Columbine incident in April of 1999, the new law has mandated every public and private school to conduct these lockdowns.

The Summit County Sheriff’s Office is responsible for completing lockdown drills at 18 local schools in the contracted areas of Coventry, Twinsburg, Northfield Centre, and in the City of Green. A Sheriff’s Deputy and a supervisor are responsible for entering these schools and announcing a lockdown. During this time, security measures are taken to ensure the safety of all students and staff at the schools. These safety measures are evaluated by the Sheriff’s Office and recommendations are made to the local school along with a letter specifying any additional information which could help ensure the safety of their students in an emergency situation.

The Sheriff’s Office was pleased with the participation and the continuing efforts by the local school districts to keep their children safe.

Please forward all questions to Inspector Bill Holland at 330-643-5091.
