AFSCME OHIO COUNSEL 8 AND LOCAL 1229 COMMUNICATION TECHNICIAN UNIT AND OFFICE AND CLERICAL UNIT VOTE FOR CONCESSIONS After informational meetings the Sheriff had with the bargaining unit members of AFSCME Ohio Counsel 8 and Local 1229, the Communication Technician Unit and Office and Clerical Unit voted yesterday to accept concessions proposed by the Office of Budget and Management and the Summit County Sheriff’s Office to address a budgetary gap of $133,000. The eight civilian workers, including 911 dispatchers and office and clerical workers, who were notified of layoffs effective January 31, 2010, will receive letters today rescinding their pending layoff. The Communication Technician Unit overwhelming voted in favor to accept the concessions by a vote of 13 to 3. The Office and Clerical Unit experienced a closer vote, but bargaining unit members voted to accept concessions by a vote of 20 to 16. Bargaining unit members will take 15 (fifteen) furlough days in 2010, regardless of their salary. It is a positive day in the Sheriff’s Office throughout the various divisions. Employees and Management expressed joy and relief that jobs were spared. The Sheriff attributes this result to the leadership his employees have exercised, including supervisors and subordinates, in getting accurate information to the employees. The Sheriff also expressed the value and importance of meeting with his civilian employees, veteran employees, as well as workers slated for layoff, to answer questions and concerns and provide the employees with the information needed so that the employees could make an informed vote.
