Magistrate Kristin Maxwell

Kristin Maxwell has applied the experience she gained in private practice and as a prosecutor to her role as Magistrate in the Juvenile Court.

Magistrate Maxwell earned her undergraduate degree in Political Science and a minor in Journalism from the University of Missouri in 1989. Prior to graduating, Magistrate Maxell served as an intern with the Missouri Legislature.  She then attended the University Of Akron School Of Law and earned her Juris Doctorate in 1992.

After graduating from Law School Magistrate Maxwell entered private practice.  She worked primarily in the areas of civil litigation, criminal defense, family law and worker’s compensation.

In 2001 Magistrate Maxwell left private practice and joined the City of Akron Prosecutor’s Office. She successfully prosecuted many misdemeanor offenders who were charged with offenses such as domestic violence, driving under the influence and theft.

Magistrate Maxwell joined the Juvenile Court in 2003.

Since joining the Court Magistrate Maxwell has established a Teen Court diversion program.  In this program, teen volunteers act as advocates and jurors in cases involving first time misdemeanor offenders. The teen jury is responsible for determining a disposition for the offender using the principles of restorative justice.

Magistrate Maxwell has also been instrumental in creating a special court program for pregnant teens and teen age parents.  The goal of the program is to assist teen-agers who are parents or who are about to become parents in learning effective parenting and living skills.

Magistrate Maxwell has also served on the Crossroads Advisory Board, the Truancy Task Force and is a current Board Member at Tarry House.
