JUVENILE COURT TOY PROJECT USED AS LEARNING TOOL

Community service is a common sanction when a youth is found delinquent. It normally entails cleaning the grounds of a park or neighborhood facility. It’s functional and it’s effective. But Juvenile Court Judge Linda Tucci Teodosio thought, under the right circumstances, some creativity could be applied to community service.

It is Judge Teodosio’s contention that lessons in life should be taught to youths in the juvenile justice system when given the chance, and the community service component of the sentencing process provided that opportunity.

Judge Teodosio encouraged her Magistrates to add a new element to the child’s community service sanction: the child must find a way to earn enough money to purchase a gift valued at around $40 and donate the gift to the Court for distribution to neglected and abused children.

The response has been impressive. The youths embraced the idea and their gifts have been stored at Juvenile Court. On Friday, December 19th from 2pm until 5pm the gifts will find new owners.

Judge Teodosio has “ordered” that the presents will go to children who are in permanent custody of the Children Services Board and awaiting adoption. Santa Claus, also known as Magistrate Jim Whited, and court staff will preside over a holiday party at the Evangel Temple next door to the William P. Kannel Juvenile Court Center on Dan Street and the gifts will be distributed.

“I couldn’t be more pleased with the results of our Toy Project,” said Judge Teodosio. “I congratulate my staff for pouring their hearts into this project. But most of all, this experience has been mutually beneficial to all the young people who were involved. In this case, it’s just as good to give as receive.”
