Why Prepare a Summit County General Plan? (Continued)
As the old saying goes, “If you don’t know where you’re going, you don’t know how to get there.” The Plan identifies areas of concern and provides a policy guide designed to aid in future decision making. Because of its scope, the Summit County General Land Use Development Plan can more readily embrace those issues that are best considered on a regional scale, such as transportation, economic development, preservation of natural resources and open space, and utility infrastructure. Solutions to these issues often require cooperation and collaboration among various levels of government, which is often more easily addressed from a broad countywide perspective.

The General Land Use Development Plan respects local priorities, local control and the personalities of local jurisdictions, while seeking more regional solutions to common problems. By identifying areas of consistency and opportunities for collaboration, the plan provides a forum in which to address community goals in a proactive, coordinated manner.

Specifically, the General Plan may be utilized to:

  • Direct public land use decisions
  • Inform private development decisions
  • Coordinate transportation issues and linkages
  • Provide a framework for community planning
  • Update zoning regulations
  • Target capital improvement plans
  • Support economic incentives
  • Procure outside funding assistance

The General Land Use Development Plan communicates the vision for Summit County’s future and provides a comprehensive compilation of the various policies and strategies identified to implement the vision. This Plan informs decision-makers at all levels of government, as well as individuals, businesses and nonprofit organizations, as they plan their future activities in Summit County.
