Summit County Executive Russell M. Pry Sponsors 9/11 Remembrance
Art Project, darn, stitch and PEACE
On Friday, September 11, 2009, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Summit County
Executive Russell M. Pry's Department of Communications will be creating
the 8th annual 9/11 Remembrance Art Project, darn, stitch and PEACE. The
community art project will be held in the first floor lobby of the Ohio
Building, located at 175 South Main Street in downtown Akron. The public
is invited to participate.
Participating citizens will be asked to stitch white buttons onto a
vintage quilt in the design of a peace sign. Each citizen will be asked
to sign the back of the button. The buttons are different in size, hue
and shapes showing that each of us can bring about peace in different
ways. The quilt is vintage so the original darning is missing in areas
and the edges are frayed representing the tough times America has
experienced.
The symbol of peace has been used for generations and portrays the hope
for peace and prosperity. The quilt reminds all of us of family
traditions and loved ones who have passed. Both the quilt and peace sign
are strong symbols of America and the courage, strength and goodwill we
share for our past and future.
September 11, 2001 remains one of our history's darkest days, yet eight
years later, we honor our first responders and remember those who lost
their lives by creating a tapestry of our strong and loving culture.
The 9/11 Remembrance Art Project was established in 2002. Past art
projects are currently on display in The Room at Church & Main, located
at 175 South Main Street in downtown Akron. For more information contact
