Summit County Executive Russell M. Pry Issues Grant to the
All-American Soap Box Derby
On Monday, March 3, 2008, Summit County Executive Russell M. Pry
announced that the County of Summit Department of Community and Economic
Development will forward a $50,000 grant to the All-American Soap Box
Derby. The funds will help support the operations of the 71st
All-American Soap Box Derby World Championship.
The first All-American Soap Box Derby was held in Dayton, Ohio in 1934.
The following year, the race was moved to Akron because of its central
location and hilly terrain. In 1936, Akron civic leaders recognized the
need for a permanent track site and through the efforts of the Works
Progress Administration (WPA), Derby Downs became a reality.
Each year since, youngsters from throughout the United States and
foreign countries come to the City of Akron with the race cars they have
built and driven to victory in their home towns.
“The All-American Soap Box Derby event is a proud community tradition,”
said Summit County Executive Russell M. Pry. “In addition to its
historic relevance to the City of Akron, the annual event has a
significant impact on the Akron-Summit County hospitality industry.”
The All-American Soap Box Derby is administered by International Soap
Box Derby, Inc., an Akron based non-profit organization.
