Executive McCarthy Promotes Tornado Awareness and Safety

Summit County Executive James B. McCarthy’s Emergency Management Agency (EMA), a unit that exists to inform and educate Summit County citizens about threats to life, safety and property, will be promoting tornado awareness to citizens throughout the month of April.

“When tornado warnings are issued time is of the essence.  Sheltering immediately will save your life and the lives of your family.  It is important for citizens to prepare a tornado safety plan so everyone knows where to go and what to do,” says Summit County Emergency Management Coordinator Annette Petranic.  “When choosing a shelter, choose an area that is in the lowest part of your home, try to be as close to the center of your home as possible and stay away from outside windows.”

Once a proper shelter area is located, the Summit County Emergency Management Agency recommends that the following emergency supplies be placed in your shelter area:

  • Battery powered radio and flashlight (extra batteries);

  • Water (3 day supply – 1 gallon per person, per day) stored in sealed, unbreakable containers.  Identify the storage date and replace every six months.

  • Food (non-perishable packaged or canned) and a non-electric can opener;

  • First aid kit and prescription medications;

  • Blankets and/or sleeping bags;

  • Extra supplies or equipment for any special medical needs;

  • Credit cards, cash and an extra set of car keys; and

  • Clothing, shoes and rain gear.

Throughout the month of April, the Summit County Emergency Management Agency will be promoting tornado awareness and safety by mailing helpful fact sheets to local police, fire and elected officials to be shared with the public.
