Summit County Department of Animal Control Implements In-House Spay and Neuter Services

Beginning Monday, June 4, 2007, Summit County Executive James B. McCarthy’s Department of Animal Control will offer in-house spay-and-neuter services to animals being adopted through the County of Summit Animal Control facility, located at 460 E. North Street in downtown Akron.

Due to the implementation of this new service, the cost to adopt a dog fully treated by the County of Summit will be $90; while, the cost to adopt a cat fully treated will be $57. Full treatment includes: a license (if necessary), shots, spay-and-neuter operations and de-flea & de-worm services. Upon completion of the adoption process, all spay-and-neuter operations will be performed. Animals will then be prepared to be taken to their new homes.

“Spay and neutering is an important step towards stopping the addition of unwanted and uncared for animals in Summit County,” said Animal Control Manager Christine Fatheree. “If we can provide this service to our citizens before the animals leave our facility, we have the potential to stop additional strays.”

In August 2006, an evaluation report issued by the National Animal Control Association (NACA) addressed the critical need for the County of Summit to offer spay-and-neuter services at the animal control facility.

“My administration has made the recommendations of the NACA report a top priority,” said Summit County Executive James B. McCarthy. “The implementation of spay-and-neuter
services at the County of Summit animal control facility is a significant accomplishment.”
