River Day, May 17, 2008

County of Summit, NEFCO, MetroParks serving Summit County, and the Ohio EPA were among those represented at River Day. The City of Munroe Falls did a great job in arranging a variety of activities, including a farmers market, band, petting zoo, corn hole contest, various displays and a visit by a wildlife rehabilitator. It is estimated that 500 people showed up, a real festival along the river!

During the River Day events, Ohio EPA's Bill Zawiski demonstrated fish shocking at the dam site.  The green-sided darters (right) that he caught in the river are pollution sensitive and indicate good water quality.

Riverbank Restoration

The final work funded under the Section 319 grants has been completed, including floodplain restoration, seeding , and planting at a tributary upstream of the dam and treatment of invasive species along the river bank for three miles upstream of the dam site.

Ohio EPA's fish sampling in the middle Cuyahoga in 2007 indicated that fish populations at Kent Dam had recovered to meet warm water habitat standards, and those upstream of the Munroe Falls Dam are in the process of recovering and should be fully recovered within a couple of years.

We hope that the partnerships and the good work that have begun with this project continue, so that we can protect and improve our newly restored river and the tributaries flowing into it through our communities.

Thanks to our partners, advisors, and volunteers for your help and patience in restoring this resource. The Cuyahoga River flows freely at the site of the former dam. The river has again become a community asset. We could not have done it without you!

Thank You, One and All!
