Biography

Ilene Shapiro is an At-Large Member of Summit County Council and serves as Chair of the Planning and Economic Development Committee and is actively engaged in numerous economic development initiatives. Additionally, Councilwoman Shapiro Chairs the Summit County Green Task Force.

Ilene is an accomplished business leader with a history of successful business ventures for high growth, turn-around and start-up organizations with an emphasis on the wholesale/retail, banking and health care industries.  Today, Shapiro is the Director of Business Development with the Summa Foundation, a subsidiary of Summa Health System.

Actively involved in a variety of community organizations, Shapiro currently serves on the City of Akron Emergency Services Board (EMS) and the Northeast Ohio Four County Regional Planning and Development Organization (NEFCO) Board. She also serves as Co-Chair of the Metropolitan and Regional Affairs Committee of the County Commissioners Association of Ohio (CCAO) and Vice President of the Summit County Planning Commission. Ilene has also served as Chair of the Summit County Charter Review Commission.

She is an alumnus of both Leadership America and Leadership Akron.  She is a past president of the Women’s Network and is a founder of the Women’s Endowment Fund of the Akron Community Foundation.

In recognition of her distinguished work, Shapiro was awarded the U.S. Small Business Administration Women’s Business Advocate for the State of Ohio and the Judith A. Resnick Woman of the Year Award for Inspiration.  In 2007, she was recognized with a Women of Professional Excellence Award from Women's Network Inc.

In September of 2008, Shapiro was honored with the 2008 Northeast Ohio Athena Award sponsored by ATHENA International and Inside Business Magazine. 

She is featured as an expert on the development of state-of-the-art processes for motivating, measuring, and rewarding internal competition in the book entitled “Lessons from the Nordstrom Way: How Companies are Emulating the #1 Customer Service Company.”

Council Member Shapiro lives in West Akron.
