Sheriff
Alexander sets the priorities of his new Administration:
Young
people The first subject Sheriff Drew
Alexander talks about is the youth - the young people - of Summit
County. He is thinking about both sponsoring new youth programs and
improving old ones. When Sheriff Alexander was a member of the Akron
Police Department, he helped to implement the Do the Right Thing
Program. He wants to make this program County-wide and to expand it to
serve all ages from Pre-K through high school seniors.
"Doing the right thing can be
anything from improving grades and being a leader in the classroom to
saving somebody's life," the Sheriff explained. "I'm thinking
of kids who give lunch money to other kids who've had their money taken
from them, of kids who find money on the playground and turn it in, of
kids who stick up for kids who are being picked on and bullied - even of
kids who intervene to break up gangs that beat up younger
children."
The Sheriff
endorses "Do the Right Thing" because it builds the self-esteem of young
people and creates a partnership between the Sheriff's Office the Board
of Education and
teachers.
