"Court In The Community" Returning To Barberton

Summit County Juvenile Court Judge Linda Tucci Teodosio has announced that Barberton’s Highland Middle School has been selected as the site of the Summit County Juvenile Court’s “Court in the Community.”

On Thursday, April 19, actual truancy hearings will be conducted in the library of the school beginning at 9 a.m. At this point, six hearings are scheduled involving students from Barberton Public Schools who have been referred to the Court as chronic truants. Some students could be accompanied to the hearing by their parents or guardians who have been charged with Failure to Send. Magistrate Tavia Baxter will preside over the hearings.

The first Court in the Community was held at Lawton Community Center in Akron in 2004. It proved effective enough to schedule others at Goodrich Middle School and, last year, U.L. Light Middle School in Barberton.

“I think it is important to demonstrate not only to the student and their parents but to the entire community that the Court takes truancy seriously,” said Judge Teodosio. “Plus, by holding the hearings at the school, we achieve one of our primary goals: to have the student in school and sent back to class at the end of his or her hearing.”
