  Did You Know?
The United States recycles 32.5% of its waste, a rate that has almost doubled over the past 15 years ********** The United States now recycles 52% of all paper, 31% of all plastic soft drink bottles, 45% of all aluminum beer and soft drink cans, 63% of all steel packaging, and 67% of all major appliances ********** If every household in the United States replaced conventional light bulbs in their five most frequently used light fixtures with bulbs that have the ENERGY STAR rating, it would prevent greenhouse gases equivalent to the emissions from nearly 10 million cars ********** In the average home, 40% of all electricity used to power home electronics is consumed while the products are turned off. Nationwide, the total electricity consumed by electronics while idle equals the annual output of 12 power plants ********** A leaky toilet can waste 200 gallons of water per day ********** About one-sixth of all the electricity generated in the U.S. is used to air condition buildings ********** Vehicle Co2 emissions cannot be reduced with exhaust treatment devices; they can only be reduced by decreasing the amount of fossil fuel burned by: driving less, using a renewable fuel, getting more mileage out of each gallon of fuel ********** Households account for around 20% of total energy consumption in the U.S. (EIA). The Typical household spends more than $1,900 a year on energy bills. ********** Current national recycling efforts reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 49.9 million metric tons of carbon, which is equivalent to the annual GHG emissions from 39.6 million passenger cars ********** The water you save every year by purchasing a new ENERGY STAR qualified clothes washer instead of a new non-qualified model is enough to do 300 loads of laundry **********

  What Can You Do?
It doesn’t take major sacrifices for people to make a big difference in helping Summit County and the planet become more sustainable. Just a few simple adjustments in your day-to-day life can have a significant impact.

Ten Small Things You Can Do To Make A BIG Difference

þ Turn off the lights when you leave a room (household appliances should also be turned off when not in use).

þ When you make a quick run to the store, bring your own reusable bag and help cut down on the large number of paper and plastic bags that go to waste each day.

þ If you have a thermostat, lower it by two degrees to save energy.

þ Wash your laundry in cold water instead of hot and, when weather permits, try and line dry your clothes as well.

þ Keep your microwave clean and you will maximize its efficiency and cut down on its energy use (and your monthly utility bill).

þ Drink water from your tap instead of purchasing water in bottles which requires much more energy to produce.

þ If you’re not quite ready to purchase a hybrid vehicle, simply making sure you have adequate air in your tires can help your vehicle achieve its best fuel economy and thus, cut down on the number of pollutants emitted.

þ When printing multiple pages, try and print on both sides of the paper, which immediately reduces your paper usage by half

þ Replace as many light bulbs in your house as possible with compact fluorescent bulbs that are more efficient than the traditional kind.

þ Recycle! By participating in your communities recycling program can be simple and effective.
